A Chevy pickup smashed head-on into a white pickup around 2 pm on Monday, November 5, 2018, injuring both drivers and a passenger. The Chevy was traveling north when it apparently crossed the center line of Keavy Rd and hit the white pickup.

The diver of the Chevy was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, and the driver and passenger of the white pickup were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital also in Lexington. It’s unknown if impairment or distracted driving played a part in the accident.

Head-on Crashes Cause Severe Damage

Experts say that the best defense against a head-on collision is to remain alert and be ready to swerve out of the way. Hitting a guardrail or other object is preferable to a head-on because of the severe damage it can cause.

Causes of head-on collisions usually entail impaired or distracted driving such as texting or falling asleep. The most typical scenario is that the driver of one vehicle drifts across the center lane and into on-coming traffic. Often there is little warning and no time to even apply the brakes making the impact that much greater.

Finding Fault

In head-on accidents, it’s sometimes difficult to determine fault because often the vehicles are no where near the point of impact, and there is a great deal of debris around the scene. This means that forensic investigators will have to be called in to determine what happened and hopefully determine who was at fault.

Don’t go it Alone

When damages are so severe, it may seem that the insurance company will just pay for all the medical bills and give the injured the limits on the policy because there is really nothing to argue about. However, experience says that isn’t the case. There can be many issues where an attorney is needed. There might be secondary insurance coverage when the damages exceed the policy limits, and sometimes a victim’s own accident insurance might pay some of the medical  bills. Also, if fault is not obvious, the insurance company may try to blame the accident on the victim which will reduce or even negate a claim.
