A two-car crash close to Bays Branch killed one driver on May 23, 2018.

According to WSAZ-3, this crash occurred around 9:30PM on Wireman Shoals Bridge along KY-321. Allegedly, one driver was headed north when she lost control of her vehicle, hit a guardrail, and smashed head-on into another car. At the time of the crash, the second vehicle was traveling south.

Sadly, the crash victim in the southbound vehicle was killed on impact. The driver in the other vehicle, however, was taken to a local hospital where she is still recovering from her injuries. Local police are now investigating the cause of this crash.

How Many Head-On Collisions Are There In Kentucky?

Although head-on collisions are somewhat rare, they are amongst the most fatal car crashes. The latest findings from the Kentucky State Police show head-on collisions make up about 2 percent of total crashes in the Bluegrass State, but they cause 30 percent of traffic fatalities annually. Some safety experts believe these numbers will increase in the ensuing years due to the proliferation cell phones and the increase in distracted driving cases.

Amazingly, even if two drivers are traveling at 45mph towards each other, the force of the impact from a head-on collision will be doubled. That means both drivers will feel a force similar to hitting a solid object at 90mph. Even with the most advanced air bag technology, it’s highly unlikely the victim of a head-on collision will walk away with only minor injuries.

Those who are lucky enough to survive these horrific accidents often need extensive medical care. A few common injuries from head-on collisions include fractured bones, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain damage.
